Cedar Cladding Issues We Solve

  • Cupping and splitting boards
  • Mould infestation
  • Greying or silvering
  • Splaying mitre joins
  • Water ingress problems
  • Weathered and unprotected timber

These are signs that the weatherboards on your home require some maintenance.

Without a protective coating your cedar can start to display some of these issues.  Cedar needs to be stained every two years or painted to provide protection from the harsh UV environment in New Zealand.

What we recommend

Whilst paint has a different aesthetic to stain it will last significantly longer than a stain system.  Generally due to the graininess of the timber a dark colour can be used, especially with Resene Lumbersider Cool Colour technology. A paint system will last approximately eight to ten years if it is washed down annually and provide excellent protection to the timber integrity.  There is a significant cost benefit to painting your cedar rather than staining.

For most cedar properties we strongly recommend a paint system over a stain system.  Stains should be reapplied every two years, according to most manufacturers. This becomes expensive if you need to erect scaffolding. However, if you have an architecturally designed house that was meant to be stained, then you should stay with the original intent of the designer.  The stain must be reapplied regularly, however, to maintain the integrity of the timber.

FAQs

Do I need to coat my cedar?

Yes, if you don’t protect the timber it will eventually degrade to a point where your house needs recladding. Silvering of cedar is actually mould infestation that needs to bleached and cleaned.

My cedar is cupping – what can I do?

If the timber is severely cupping you may need to replace the boards. You can’t nail back cupped timber. If it is only slightly cupped we would recommend painting the timber a dark colour to prevent further cupping and to hide the gaps between the boards.

Can I paint my cedar a dark colour?

If the cedar is weathered you can paint your cedar a dark colour. New cedar should be stained for a period of time so it can weather enough to allow for painting. Weathered cedar grips paint very well.
